| The Monelison Volunteer Fire Department (MVFD) is committed to transparency and community trust regarding our equipment and technology. Recently, the federal government announced a ban on granting FCC approval for new drones manufactured in foreign countries. This measure aims to mitigate potential security risks if such technology were to be accessed by foreign governments.
Important Clarification: This federal ban does NOT affect drones currently in use, nor does it prohibit the sale of drones that have already received FCC approval. These drones can continue to be sold by U.S. resellers and operated by agencies like ours.
Why We Continue to Use DJI Drones After extensive research and evaluation, MVFD has determined that DJI drones remain the most effective and reliable option for our operational needs. Key reasons include:
* Proven Performance: DJI drones account for approximately 80% of drones used nationwide. * Superior Technology: Their camera systems, flight avoidance technology, and overall build quality are unmatched. * Cost Efficiency: DJI drones are available at roughly one-third the cost of comparable U.S.-manufactured drones.
Our Commitment to Data Security We understand concerns about data security and have implemented strict measures to ensure the integrity and safety of our operations:
* No Foreign Data Storage: No video or imagery is stored or uploaded to any foreign-controlled server. * Secure Connectivity: Our drone and remote do not wirelessly connect to foreign-controlled cloud services. * Trusted U.S. Software: We have partnered with DroneSense, a U.S.-based software company widely used by major metropolitan agencies. Our drone is only operated and controlled using their software. * Controlled Firmware Updates: Firmware updates from DJI are installed only via direct USB connection and only after DroneSense confirms they pose no security risk. * U.S.-Based Data Storage: All telemetry data is stored on a secure, U.S.-based cloud server operated by Dronesense.
MVFD will continue to monitor federal guidance and industry best practices to ensure our operations remain secure and compliant.
Looking Ahead Thanks to the success of our recent fundraising drive, MVFD will soon acquire a second drone. While the specific model has not yet been determined, we assure our community that security and reliability will remain our top priorities. |
