Monelison Volunteer Fire Department Achieves Record-Breaking Milestone and Reflects on a Year of Growth and Resilience

The Monelison Volunteer Fire Department is proud to announce a historic achievement as we close out the year. As of this morning, our department has surpassed the previous annual call record set in 2023 by more than 100 calls. In 2023, we responded to 726 calls; today, we stand at an incredible 827 calls, marking a significant milestone in our service to the community.

“This milestone is a testament to the dedication and hard work of every member of our department,” said Fire Chief J. Malott. “Despite the challenges we faced this year, including the loss of beloved members, our team has continued to rise to the occasion and serve Amherst County with pride and professionalism.”

This year has brought both challenges and triumphs. We had the loss of several high-call-running members, including the untimely passing of our beloved Assistant Chief Mack Mays, whose dedication and leadership will never be forgotten. Despite these hardships, our team has grown stronger. We welcomed three newly certified firefighters from the latest fire academy, each stepping up to serve with excellence. Additionally, Firefighter Claude Esposito was honored for an extraordinary 50 years of service to the citizens of Amherst County.

Our department also made major advancements in equipment and technology. We placed our new Squad truck (Squad 21) into service, launched a drone program last spring with great success, and are already working toward adding a second drone. To better connect with our community, we introduced a brand-new website and implemented an electronic application process for new members, making volunteering easier than ever.

Recruitment and training remain a priority. This year, we welcomed six new members, and have a total of eight that will begin firefighter training next week. These additions strengthen our ability to serve and protect Amherst County.

We are deeply grateful for the unwavering support from our community—from generous donations to the homemade and store-bought treats that brighten our station throughout the year. Your kindness fuels our mission.

As we look ahead to 2026, we are excited to continue growing, embracing new technologies, and serving with dedication. We are always seeking volunteers—visit our website to learn more and apply online.

Happy New Year, and God bless you all!
