I have lived in Amherst County my entire life. I joined MVFD in 2002 initially because of being on the Emergency Response Team at BWXT. I wanted to take the training I was receiving and give back to my community. Since 2002 I continued to enhance my knowledge through training and the various incidents we respond to. No one incident is exactly the same and always a means to learn as well as grow from. I was blessed to work my way through the ranks from a Firefighter, Secretary, Lieutenant, Captain and then Deputy Chief. The reward is growing yourself as an individual, being a mentor, building relationships both interdepartmental and outside the organization, earning trust from others, and most importantly helping a complete stranger in a time of need. The Fire & EMS world is demanding and can either make you or break you. You will make it what it is depending on how much time and commitment you are willing to devote. This field, especially volunteering requires you to have a balance in life. However, if you are willing to join, get the training and dedicate a little time, the reward in life is worth it! Never stop training, if you do it is time to find something else to do...
