AARON M. COPPEDGE (1949-1980)
Aaron was a member of Monelison Volunteer Fire Department from 1977-1980. He served as a firefighter and chaplain. On February 4, 1980, at approximately 0600 hours, Monelison Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a two-story residential structure fire. Firefighter/Chaplain Coppedge responded to the 2nd floor of the structure. While on the 2nd floor Coppedge was overcome by smoke and ran out of air in his self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). To lose a life is nothing anyone wants to experience much less to lose someone in a line of duty death (LODD). We dedicated our current Engine 21 in memory of Aaron Coppedge. His life and legacy will always be honored along with his scarifice he made for his department and community.

Chief Cash was the primary sponsor of the county incentive program for volunteers. A true example of a dedicated member of MVFD. MACK GERALDDANE MAYS, JR. (1978-2025)
Assistant Chief Mays was a volunteer firefighter, and proud Assistant Chief serving Monelison Volunteer Fire Department from 2012 until his unexpected death in July 2025. Chief Mays was also a part of Amherst Life Saving Crew as well as Amherst Fire Department begining his emergency service career in 1999. His cominbed emergency services totaled 26 years. He loved the fire service and truly was dedicated to the department and community. This was shown by his ongoing recruitment post. Chief Mays served the department with heart and passion. In 2024 the department graciously fulfilled one of Mack's desires as he was elected as Lieutenant. Then in 2025 he was more than honored when they elected him as Assistant Chief. In Chief Mays own words: "I plan to make sure that as the Assistant Chief I further the departments future. I know I am not perfect but I will not let anyone down. So my friends continue to pray for me. I am proof God doesn't give up." Chief Mays also took on the role left by Chief Cash of maintaining the history of the department along with locating Honorary Members. We are forever grateful for Chief Mays service. The legacy he leaves behind is one that inspires, uplifts, and challenges the rest of us to carry forward.
