July 11, 2025

Each of us is given a beginning and an end—the dates that mark our time on this earth. But it’s the dash in between that tells the story of our lives. On the evening of July 10, 2025, we unexpectedly lost our brother and Assistant Chief, Mack Mays.

Chief Mays proudly served the Monelison Volunteer Fire Department for 12 years. He loved this department deeply and was always willing to do whatever was needed for his fellow firefighters and his community.

He had planned to take some well-deserved rest and relaxation this weekend after covering for Chief Malott during a business trip—stepping up without hesitation to fulfill the role of Chief while he was away. That’s who Mack was—always stepping up, always giving more.

If you knew Chief Mays, you knew his passion for the fire service, for helping others, and for building a stronger department. Many of you likely saw his frequent Facebook posts recruiting new members—posts that successfully brought in several volunteers. He truly believed in the mission and future of Monelison.

Throughout his years of service, Chief Mays worked hard to grow, to learn, and to earn every position he held. He was proud—rightfully so—when he was named Assistant Chief in December 2024. He sought advice from others, always striving to do what was right for the department. He also took on the role of department historian, researching our past and recognizing honorary members with respect and admiration.

In Mack’s own words in December 2024: “As I look back on 2024 Iserved my term as Lieutenant for Monelison Volunteer Fire Department and I tried to give 100% of what time I could spare. I Love Linda Bryant for her understanding in allowing me to go out to help others. I worked with the best to bring on new members. Working closely with the other officers Captain Shannon Daniel, Captain John Metz, Captain Kalab Miller on different projects and helping provide leadership when our Chiefs were out of town. Running on over 300 calls is not easy with a full time job and making sure my loved ones have me at home too. I Thank God for the opportunity. I want to thank the members of Monelison Volunteer Fire Department for working with me over the years.
December the 10th 2024 I was elected
Assistant Chief of Monelison Volunteer Fire Department for 2025. I plan to make sure that as the Assistant Chief I further the Departments future. I know I am not perfect but I will not let anyone down. So my friends continue to pray for me. I am proof that God doesn't give up on anyone.”

Chief Mays once shared that he hoped to become Fire Chief someday, if the department ever saw fit. Mack—you were Chief. In the time you stepped up, you led with integrity, heart, and dedication. You fulfilled that calling.

We are forever grateful for your service. The legacy you leave behind is one that inspires, uplifts, and challenges the rest of us to carry the torch forward.

MVFD 122, final call.
We love you, brother. Rest easy—we’ve got it from here. Godspeed.

Chief Mays is survived by his loving mother, family, his fiancée Linda, their two dogs, and a brotherhood who stood with him until the end. We ask that you keep his family and the department in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

If you would like to support the family in any way, please contact the Monelison Volunteer Fire Department at 434-929-3115 or through Facebook Messenger.
