| At 5:58 AM this morning, Amherst County Emergency Dispatch received an automated crash detection alert from an iPhone, pinpointing the coordinates of a potential motor vehicle accident. The Monelison Volunteer Fire Department was immediately dispatched to the location.
While iPhone crash detection alerts are not uncommon in the area—and often turn out to be false alarms caused by dropped phones—the department treats every alert as a real emergency. That vigilance paid off today.
As Squad 21 was en route, a 911 call came in from the driver involved in the crash, confirming the incident. Thanks to the early notification from the iPhone, emergency crews were already well on their way.
Upon arrival at the intersection of U.S. Route 501 and State Route 130, responders found a tractor trailer overturned on its side. Fortunately, the driver was uninjured and had exited the vehicle on his own. There were no immediate fire or environmental hazards at the scene.
As a precaution, fire crews deployed absorbent booms around a nearby storm drain in case of any fluid leaks. Multiple heavy-duty wreckers were called to assist with vehicle recovery, and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) was notified to shut down the westbound lane of Route 130 to ensure the safety of all personnel on scene.
This incident highlights the growing role of technology in emergency response and the importance of rapid, coordinated action. |
